Solar could play big role in helping renewables displace UK s planned gas fleet

Solar could play big role in helping renewables displace UK s planned gas fleet Each 1.8 GW of new gas generation capacity could be replaced by 1.7 GW of solar as part of a cleaner, 6.3 GW collection of renewables and energy storage facilities-and that alternative already comes in cheaper than the business-as-usual approach, according to the Carbon Tracker thinktank.London-based thinktank Carbon Tracker has claimed portfolios of clean energy and storage assets are already cheaper than new combined-cycle gas turbines in the U.K.-with last year proving the inflection point. The cost of developing the 6.3 GW-capacity mix of clean energy assets Carbon Tracker estimated would .

Renkube s innovative technology allows for optical solar panel tracking without movement

Team Digit | Published on 09 Mar 2021 Renkube Private Limited, one of the Startups associated with the Nexus Startup hub has come up with an innovative solution that allows for optical tracking of solar panels, without having to use servos and motors to keep the panels aligned to the Sun. Instead of flat solar panels, Renkube creates panels with its patented technology, that use a series of grooves to guide the photons to the solar cells, resulting in a 20 percent rise in electricity generation, while at the same time having no moving parts. We spoke to Renkube to better understand their innovation.

Offshore wind permitting bottleneck expected to ease as Interior completes review of first US large project

Dive Brief: The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) completed its environmental review of the Vineyard Wind offshore wind project, the Department of the Interior announced Monday. The 800 MW project will be the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the U.S. and is expected to start delivering energy in 2023, after developers pushed back the intended 2022 in-service date due to federal permitting delays. The Final Environmental Impact Statement is the second to last step in the federal permitting process for the project. The Interior Department could greenlight the project as early as April, according to Environment America s Research and Policy Center.

Extinct Niobium Isotope Reveals Long-Kept Secrets of Solar System

Date Time Extinct Niobium Isotope Reveals Long-Kept Secrets of Solar System Evidence of extinct radionuclides like Niobium-92, which formed before the birth of our Solar System, has been identified in meteorites. Using this evidence, scientists at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) ETH Zürich, National Institute of Polar Research, and Konkoly Observatory pinpointed the initial abundance of Niobium-92 by studying rare rutile and zircon minerals from meteoritic fragments. This allowed them to date events in the early Solar System with greater precision and provide constraints on the production of Niobium-92 in different types of supernova explosions. When an element has a surplus of protons or electrons, it becomes unstable and sheds these additional particles as radiation until it reaches stability. Niobium-92 (
